Careers Panel advice for Legal Executive Journal

This month the careers panel looks at the extent to which female lawyers need to be more feminine around the workplace and the value of years of paralegal experience.

  • A female partner at my firm recently told me that I should cut a more feminine figure if I wanted to advance my career - wearing more makeup and so on. I dress smartly enough, I think, but have never really been into all that. Is the legal profession still like that?
  • I have been idling along as a paralegal doing pretty low-level work and not working that hard for several years, but have finally decided to commence my ILEX studies and aggressively pursue a career in the law. Will those years as a paralegal count against me looking for a job?

The members of the panel have a broad range of background and experience and includes Trafalgar Director, Patricia Wheatley Burt.
