Careers Panel advice for Legal Executive Journal

This month the careers panel advises a legal executive on being supervised by a much younger solicitor and what women should do if they are not sure how female-friendly a potential new firm is. This months questions include:

  • My supervising solicitor is 29, around 15 years younger than me, and it seems to bother him. He is always awkward around me and prefers dealing with others in the team, all of whom are younger. In all honesty I find it a bit strange at times too, because I have children in their early 10s, but I don't think it affects my work. What can I do to improve our relationship?
  • I have found a job that meets all my criteria, but I am slightly concerned that all of the firm's several partners are men. There are some female fee-earners but I fear there may be a culture that does not encourage women lawyers to progress, and I really want to become a partner. I have no evidence for this, but is there anything I can do to be sure before I accept the offer?

The Legal Executive Journal's Careers Panel is aimed at providing practical advice and answering questions readers may have about any aspect of the careers process.

The members of the panel have a broad range of background and experience and includes Trafalgar Director - Patricia Wheatley Burt.
