Mon Mome – Bon Mot for a Grand National Winner!

My Kid (Mon Mome), nicknamed ‘Morning’ by his groom, Sarah McQueen, looked fabulous as we stood watching him parade on the grass outside Venetia William’s house in Herefordshire on Sunday. So what makes a Grand National Winner? Mon Mome is not a huge horse for the Grand National’s fences, and as we watched him blithely walk around as though yesterday hadn’t been a particularly challenging day, Liam looked fresh as a daisy, and tying it all together was a generous-spirited Venetia, greeting well-wishers, you could spot some key traits:
  • Physically fit to do the job – Mon Mome is not particularly huge, but a lean and muscular horse with powerful shoulders, bright eyed – and clearly very well looked after with a glistening coat;
  • Liam displayed that enthusiasm you get in youth, that unabashed energy and drive to: ‘keep finding that light ahead’ so that he stayed up with the leaders, and could then streak 12 lengths ahead of the rest of the field to take the winners crown;
  • And Venetia clearly dedicated, passionate and determined to succeed, provides the direction, support and glue between the different parts.

So it was yet again an example that the sum of the parts, all working together, became infinitely more powerful than the individual components, brilliant though they may be. Teamwork, concerted effort and hard slog saw this success happen – despite the odds of 100/1! And what a result!

In this recession it is going to be the same in businesses. If we can take lesson from all walks of life – we can keep ourselves motivated and energised to keep going, bending and shaping in response to the changes in the market place.

Increasingly I am meeting people who are finding alternative ways of working and running their businesses by:

  • working from home more days per week than before,
  • using technology to deliver compliance training, e.g. webinars,
  • really modularising skills programmes into bite-sized chunks with management sponsorship;
  • creating marketing reminders for clients using blogs

So what are you doing this week that is different to the way you used to operate? This has to be the challenge we should be asking ourselves to ensure we are considering the needs of our clients and customers – and so remain fleet of foot: then we are all Grand National Champions!
